MEET OUR ADVISORS
Jennifer Newton is a seasoned public relations professional specializing in digital media and integrated marketing communications. Her experience and passion for California State University, Long Beach’s (CSULB) Journalism and Public Relations Department, of which she is an alumnus, spurred her to begin teaching there in 2017. Throughout her time as a professor at CSULB, she has taught:
With almost two decades of communications, operations and business development experience, Newton knows what it takes to develop a company into an established brand. Her experience and skills include business development, team management, public relations, corporate communications, cause marketing, internal communications, branding, human resources, event planning, blogging, content development, copywriting and more. Her work has spanned industries from automotive to fashion to beauty; with notable clients including Murad Skincare, Michael Stars, Mazda, Nissan, City of Hope, American Cancer Society, Revlon Run/Walk, Hill + Knowlton and Impact Giving.
Throughout her career, Newton’s passion has remained the same - to help small businesses and entrepreneurs achieve their business goals through strategic communications. In 2012, Newton decided to leave the corporate world to form her own company, Ideations Communications, with the goal of building a creative and positive work environment focused on helping fellow entrepreneurs succeed.
Additionally, Newton is an editor and writer for 908 Magazine and owns 1907 Bridal, a fashion company that rescues, restores and repurposes vintage wedding dresses and accessories for the modern bride.
Newton is an alumnus of CSULB where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in journalism with an emphasis in public relations and a minor in psychology (2001). Additionally she holds a degree in Apparel Manufacturing Management from FIDM (2004).
Newton lives with her husband, daughter, two dogs and one cat in Long Beach, Calif.
Dr. Soumitro Sen
Dr. Soumitro Sen is a former public relations professional and print journalist. His primary research interests include the effects of social media on the practice of public relations and the ways in which large corporations leverage social media to promote their agendas, often under the guise of engaging with stakeholders in a symmetrical conversation.
Dr. Sen’s scholarly works have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Health Communication and Journal of Creative Communications. He also has presented his scholarly works at various national and international-level conferences of communication organizations such as the National Communication Association, International Communication Association, and International Public Relations Research Conference.
Dr. Sen received his Ph.D. in communication from Purdue and his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Jadavpur University in his hometown of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India.
When not engaged in academic work, Dr. Sen loves to write poetry. A number of his poems have appeared in Brushfire, Nevada’s oldest arts and literary journal, published by the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Sen is also a painter by hobby and has had two exhibitions of oil paintings at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata.
