Internships aren’t always about who you’re working for, but how you spend your time there.

College can be extremely stressful at times- especially when it comes to juggling jobs, social life, relationships, and school all at the same time. On top of this, you begin applying for internships despite the closest thing to “marketing experience” you have, is trying to sell tanning lotions at your tanning salon job last summer. Either way, you gather up the courage to put your best foot forward and start applying everywhere. Now, the question remains - Do I apply at a big company or apply for a small company for my first internship? Here are the best tips for navigating through this stressful internship hunt:

  1. Brand Name Recognition
It’s important to recognize that big names matter. Having a company like Amazon or Fox on your resume can be extremely helpful after graduation. These companies are recognized worldwide so anywhere you go, this can be impressive to potential employers. Larger companies can even lead to great networking through sister companies upon graduation. In any job you have, remember it is always great to strive for resume builders!

2. Gaining Work Experience
Internships are meant to give you the tools and skills you need for when you start your career. You may also have all the more genuine chances to help other people on different projects. The ordinary undertakings you'll execute as an intern– authoritative work, research, taking notes, and sitting in on meetings - aren't quite the same as the work you would do at bigger companies. The main difference is that you'll have more chances to gain greater responsibility and have more extensive assortment of assignments. In the event that you are thinking about an internship with an organization that does interesting events/projects, yet nobody knows about them, that’s okay too. Do the entry level position, establish a long term connection, do your best to get engaged with significant work and help with however many distinctive errands as could be expected under the circumstances.

3. Work Environment
If you’re one of the millions of students who attend a public college, you know how easy it can be to get lost among all your peers. Sometimes it can feel like the loneliest place in the world, despite being in a school of over 35,000 kids. Make sure that if you are somebody who thrives in outgoing situations, to look more into big company internships. If it is easy for you to stand out and you’re confident in who you are, then a big company environment is for you. If you feel more comfortable in smaller, less hectic settings then apply for that small company! Either way you’re going to meet amazing people who will motivate you and mentor you along the way.
