Do you have a list of great work experience, but feel lost when it comes to translating it onto paper? A solid resume will set you apart from your competition. We are conditioned to dim our light and this how-to will help you shine!

Resume writing can be daunting. It can be difficult to decide where to start. That’s why I’m here to teach you how to rock your resume.

  • Appearance. The first thing that catches a recruiter’s eye is appearance. Yes, looks matter in this case. Bright colors and shapes can be used for more creative roles like video editing or copywriting. Choose a serif font for a white-collar position or a sans serif font for blue collar and creative roles.
  • Readability. Squeezing in all your experience is strenuous to the eye which leads into the next point. Be sure to space out your resume and use a10 - 12-point font for readability. If you have a LinkedIn, add it under your contact information. Everyone should have a LinkedIn profile. If you don’t, go start one now!
  • Customize. The best advice I can give is to tailor your resume for the position you are applying for. Every job has bullet points with key responsibilities and a position summary. Scan through and match your skills to the job description to raise your chances of receiving a call back. Much like social platforms, recruiters are using algorithms to search for keywords in order to find the best candidates.
  • Quantify. The real meat and potatoes of any resume is your experience. Numbers grab recruiters’ attention. Using data and key metrics reveals that you are well versed when it comes to the position.
  • Simplify. Keep your resume to one page only and put the most relevant information on it for the position you are applying for. And save as a PDF so your beautiful formatting with stay beautiful.

Now, you may be asking, “Well what if I’m applying to my first job?” No need to worry! Think about the upper division course work you’ve taken and add it to your resume. If you are a part of any social clubs, bring attention to that role. Talk about how much money you raised for an event or boosted social engagement by 55%. Again- metrics, metrics, metrics.

A resume is the first impression a job gets of you. Follow these tips to be a master of you!
