How to Be an Ethical Travel Influencer

Scrolling through Instagram, one brightly filtered picture after another, it’s common to come across someone traveling to a fun destination on a #sponsored trip. Influencers often take up travel industry companies on the exciting offer to jet off to another country for the price of posting strategic social media content. However, there may be a greater price attached: ethical responsibility.  ​

In 2019, many influencers were criticized for partnering with @visitsaudi, the official website for Saudi Arabia’s tourism office, and @MDLbeast, a major Riyadh music festival. Just a year earlier, Saudi Arabia had been in the news for the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The country is also notorious for its oppression of women’s rights and LGTBQ rights. These strategic Instagram sponsorships would help rebuild the image of Saudi Arabia as a destination for tourism and entertainment while covering up its human rights violations and social inequities.

In spite of the country’s track record, many influencers and celebrities such as Armie Hammer, Halima Aden, Sofia Richie, Alessandra Ambrosio, and others attended the MDL Beast music festival and posted sponsored content from there. Actress and model Emily Ratajkowski declined the invitation, stating, “It’s very important to me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, freedom of expression and the right to a free press.”  

So how can you be a more ethical influencer and avoid this controversy? Here are some tips: 

1. Do a quick Google search before you sign that contract. 
Often times, one search is all it takes to find out what the headlines are saying about this place or company. If you haven’t been to the country before, it would be worth it to find out if they’re known for kidnapping foreigners or even just overcharging tourists. 

2. Consider your values as an influencer brand.  
As part of your overall branding, you need to decide what your values and tenets are. Do you post frequently about women’s rights? Would supporting tourism to this country contradict your core values or the image you have built for yourself? It might be in your own best interest to say no to the paycheck this time. 

3. Look at the psychographics of your audience.  
In order to build content for your target audience, you need to know how they make their decisions. Why do they follow you and would this trip cause them to unfollow? If this trip is supposed to grow your business as an influencer, you should be sure that it’s not costing you a large chunk of your audience.

These tips should help you steer clear of ethical dilemmas in sponsored travel and allow your content to build your brand, not break it down.

Missing People Blogs Spread Awareness

Niche community bring awareness to missing people cases by social media and podcasts.
As the internet years progress more and more communities have formed where people from all over the world can share the same interests. One of the growing niche communities is missing people blogs and pages. Some people in this community often call themselves ‘sleuths;’ however, most people just participate to spread awareness of missing people.

​There are many different ways people in these communities help out and interact with one another. Some podcasts feature missing people's stories told by investigative journalists who talk one-on-one with the family and friends of the missing person. The Vanished is one of those
podcasts. It has a large fan following and a Facebook page where different members can post information and updates on missing people.

Long before the age of social media, missing people were posted on milk cartons or billboards on freeways. Today with the help of social media, these cases are now shared and talked about and often get the coverage they need.
Melissa Jones, host of The Vanished podcast, talked in an interview about how her coverage of a missing person’s case made it resurface in the news after years of it not being covered. The digital era has created a community of people who want to help and spread awareness through the means of social media. Police departments have also started these communities where they share information on missing people and target specific communities.
In an interview with The Missing, Ashley Iodice explains, “We have found that video elements in the digital media space garner more viewership, which we believe will help in finding more missing children.”

​There are many cases where social media has helped find missing people or has created social attention when vigils and search parties are held. What once was a story behind newspapers is now a large community of different people coming together to help raise awareness to those who are missing. As social media continues to grow so will the importance of these blogs and podcasts.

Creating exceptional, professional content on a budget

The old adage, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” still holds true. However, the truly exceptional content creator understands that offering their audience valuable content is the key to credibility, higher engagement and a stronger brand image. While CSULB students, particularly those in the public relations program, are exceptional, it’s essential to stay ahead of the curve. Here are some of the best free online programs to save to your public relations digital toolbox. If you want to elevate your content creation to the next level, keep reading.

Canva
By now, Canva is a staple in the PR toolbox. However, if you’re new to Canva, it’s an online graphic design tool with ready-made templates optimized for social media, infographics, brochures, and more. Piktochart and Easel.ly are excellent tools for creating infographics as well. 
If you’re familiar with Canva, consider trying Canva Design School. They have numerous educational series, but my favorite is the “graphic design basics.” This short and sweet mini-series covers the basics of good design, such as complimentary fonts, white space, coordinated colors and more. 

Sharethrough Headline Analyzer
My least favorite part of content creation is writing headlines. However, the Sharethrough Headline Analyzer is a great tool for analyzing the effectiveness of your headline. For example, the headline for this post received a 73, or an above-average score. Their algorithm is effective, and they offer explanations on how to make your headline even better.
 
Open Calais Demo
Part of effective search engine optimization (SEO) is understanding what keywords best highlight your written content. This program is merely a demo of the site’s capabilities but is nonetheless sufficient to identify tags. Simply copy and paste your text and it will analyze your text and identify the best keywords to tag your content with. For instance, their system has identified “public relations program,” “Canva” and “social media mastery” as a few of the keywords of this post. 
 
Grammarly and Hemingway App
Concise and effective writing is an essential skill in PR. That said, if your skills aren’t up to par, resources like Grammarly and Hemingway App can help. The Grammarly add-on for Google Chrome works on Google Drive, Gmail and most social media platforms. It helps catch spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. Hemingway App is great for understanding the readability and flow of your writing. It’s important to note that neither program is perfect, nor do they take AP style into account. 
 
Adobe Spark
Did you know that as a CSULB student, Adobe Creative Suite is available for $20 a year? While this isn’t a free program, like the others on this list, I would be remiss if I neglected to mention a deal this good. Take advantage of this incredible price, and in particular, Adobe Spark. It’s similar to Canva, but Adobe Spark offers website and short video templates. The website templates, in particular, are a unique offering I have yet to see on any other site. 
 
In sum, there are a lot of free resources available for the aspiring PR practitioner. These are just a few of them, so it’s worth doing a bit more research to bolster your digital toolbox even more.

Do you want to promote yourself or your brand? Do you want to give your audience lightning-fast updates? How about cleaning up after a PR disaster? Whatever your goals may be, Twitter has the power to help you achieve them.

Using Twitter effectively can be an amazing tool for sharing information, building your business, networking, adding value to your profile and so much more. Whether you’re a veteran on this platform or just starting out fresh, mastering Twitter can easily become a beneficial tool in your life.

Here are three features that users tend to overlook but can also provide for a more fulfilling experience on Twitter!

1. Create Lists
  • The more you use Twitter, the more people you’ll follow. And managing a crowded news feed can get overwhelming. Twitter Lists allows you to organize accounts publicly or privately without having to follow them directly.
  • Whether it’s to keep a close eye on your competitors or to keep up-to-date with your favorite idols, lists can be created for multiple purposes. For new users, you may start off by creating separate lists for your close friends and family. If you are an aspiring public relations professional like I am, you may want to keep a list of your industry leaders or prospects.
  • Twitter lists aren’t affected by Twitter’s algorithms, making everything appear in reverse chronological order. Simple and easy!

2. Share your Moments
  • Twitter moments gives you the ability to curate compelling content to tell your stories, memories and experiences by weaving existing tweets together into one. You can simply bring any subject into the center stage through various commentary, pictures, and videos that you include in it.
  • Have a clear focus. Are you reflecting on a story or creating a round-up of fun memes? Do you want to recap an event that you just experienced or promote a company you are loyal to? Just like Lists, Twitter Moments can serve for many purposes. Only you have the power to bring them into life!

3. Choose your Topics
  • We all have our own particular interests so with the Topics feature, we can easily follow them. This enhances your feed by putting relevant content on your timeline so that you can stay informed the ‘right way.’ You’ll be able to see tweets from users who are frequent communicators of that specific topic that you follow.
  • Don’t be afraid to also “mute” topics that you do not want to see. Sometimes it's hard to get away from negativity when you are on social media, but with features like these, you can make this platform a safe space for yourself.
  • Some of my favorite topics include travel, dogs, music and entertainment. What are yours?

Aside from these features, Twitter is whatever you want it to be. So make the most out of it and always strive to make those 280-word-tweets showcase the best you!

The Best Apps to Market Your Business on Instagram

What current apps are the best to run an online business on Instagram?

Social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook are growing to become popular for online business owners. To be successful in marketing towards the right audience, many online business owners use certain apps to edit photos and create the right brand or vibe they want their business to be seen as. Here are three best apps that will help you to create the right brand for your audience! 
  1. Lightroom (free)
    Lightroom is an app that is stemmed from the Adobe programs that can be used through a desktop or a mobile app. The app itself will be free of charge, but when purchasing different presets, or some may call it filters it may cost you money. I purchased all of my presets Etsy to match a certain brand for the online clothing boutique I intern for. Since their theme is golden honey with hints of pink, I learned to find a preset that will lean towards those color palettes. My favorite preset at the moment is the wonderland. Each preset comes with an easy to download the instruction manual and you can instantly edit your photos to how you want your color palette or brand to be. CSULB offers the whole Adobe creative cloud package deal on a student discount, so I suggest you take on the offer as soon as possible! 

  2. Canva (free or $12.95 for Pro)
    If you’ve ever wondered how many businesses make 
    their flyers, business cards, logos, or even infographics, it’s probably through the app Canva. Just like Lightroom, Canva could from a desktop or mobile app. It is free to use, but with a Canva Pro upgrade, you can access more templates and different editing keys than regular Canva. I use Canva for just about anything from presentations to creating a header for my business’ Facebook page it is the best app to get creative on for strategic marketing communications. This app is easy to use because it will go through all of the editing options when you first sign up. It also gives you a lot of options to choose the right color palette for your brand. The best thing about Canva is that you can create a team, which means a folder that you and your creative team can access to design and share your work.

    3. 
    PicsArt (free or $8.00 for Gold)
    My favorite app to edit my photos on is PicsArt. PicsArt can be used through a mobile app and online desktop and the Gold membership is $8 a month! Scrolling through my social media feed, I learned that many businesses edit their photos on PicsArt to get creative and stand out from the other businesses. There is an editing option called replay, which lets you replay an edit that someone else has done onto your photo.
